Swansea Free Public Library
$13.6M value · 2025 · 24,000 Sq. feet
The Swansea Free Public Library, originally built in 1899, is a cornerstone of the historical district in Swansea, MA. Johnson Roberts Associates designed this project in ways which honor the original history of the building, while also providing additional space and modern amenities to the library. This project included renovation of the existing, 2,000 square foot library, and new construction of a 22,000 square feet addition.
During construction, the 1964 addition was demolished to make room for an additional 22,000 square feet of programming space. The children's area was moved from the existing 1899 building's basement to the second floor of the addition. This second floor addition also includes a programming room, a maker's space, and a separate dedicated young adult area. The first floor expands the adult collection, incorporated conference rooms, and includes a meeting space with a 100-person occupancy. The existing 1899 building was renovated to reflect both the history and beauty of the building. The Swansea Free Public Library will not only serve as the town's library, but as a community center for all to enjoy.
